How these points work
Each stock has a different impact based on its index weight and share price. For illustration, if a $1 move contributes an estimated 0.50 index points, a $4 rise contributes approximately +2.00 points. The cards show the estimated contribution from each stock’s actual move since the previous close.
The S&P 500 weights companies by their float-adjusted market value—the value of shares available to public investors. Larger companies generally carry more weight, so the same percentage move can have a greater effect on the index. A stock’s estimated point contribution depends on its index weight, its percentage price move, and the index level. S&P index methodology.
