Index Fundamentals

Why doesn't every stock have the same impact on the S&P 500?

The S&P 500 is float-adjusted market-cap weighted. A larger weight gives a constituent more influence for a given percentage move.

Read: How Is the S&P 500 Calculated?
Why is the Dow price-weighted?

That is the Dow's methodology. Its level is based on the sum of constituent prices divided by a maintained divisor.

Is QQQ the same as the Nasdaq-100?

No. QQQ is an ETF that seeks to track the Nasdaq-100. Its fund holdings and weights can differ from official index constituents or weights.

Is IVV the same as the S&P 500?

No. IVV is an ETF that seeks to track the S&P 500. Its portfolio is a fund portfolio, not the index itself.

Are SPX, NDX, and DJIA tradable stock symbols?

They name cash indexes. ES, NQ, and YM name related CME futures contracts, which have their own prices and trading sessions.

Does the Nasdaq-100 always have exactly 100 securities?

The index targets 100 companies, and eligible multiple share classes can mean more than 100 securities. Check Nasdaq's current methodology for the specific count.

Market Watch 360 Calculations

What does index weight mean on a stock card?

It is the estimated share of an index or reference portfolio assigned to that security for the dated data source shown.

Read: Index Weight Explained
What is effective index-point contribution?

It is an estimate that translates a weighted stock move into index-point context using a reference index level.

Read: Weighted Points and Effective Contribution
Why can a large price move have a small index impact?

A stock's percentage move is only one input. A smaller index weight can keep its contribution modest.

Read: A Stock Can Rise 5% and Barely Move the Index. Why?
Why does selected stock coverage change?

Coverage changes when the selected basket size, constituents, reference weights, or snapshot date changes.

Read: Tracking 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 Stocks
Is a selected-basket chart the official index level?

No. It is an analytical view of chosen securities under stated assumptions. The complete benchmark follows its index provider's methodology.

Read: How the Weighted Index Chart Works
Does a 5% stock gain mean five index points?

No. For a cap-weighted example, multiply the stock return by its starting index weight to estimate percentage-point contribution, then use a reference index level for approximate points.

Market Data

Is Market Watch 360 receiving live or delayed data?

That depends on the customer's Alpaca account, feed, entitlement, and session. The website itself does not stream market data.

Read: What Does Real-Time Market Data Mean?
Do I need my own Alpaca account?

The desktop app uses the customer's own Alpaca connection. API credentials are entered locally in the app.

Read: Your Own Alpaca Connection
Does the website receive my API keys?

No. The website does not request or store Alpaca credentials.

Read: Your Own Alpaca Connection
Do I pay extra for market data?

Alpaca data plans and entitlements are separate from Market Watch 360 software pricing. Check the current Alpaca plan and exchange terms for your account.

Why can quotes differ between platforms?

Platforms can use different feeds, sessions, timestamps, quote conditions, or entitlements.

Read: Why Can Different Trading Platforms Show Different Prices?
Why is a bid or ask blank when last price appears?

Bid and ask are quotes, while last is a trade. They can update separately and may be absent on a given feed or session.

Read: Understanding Bid, Ask, Last, and Spread
Does market closed mean my connection failed?

No. Market-session status and provider-connection status are separate. A connected app can show a closed regular session.

What does the VIX measure?

Cboe's VIX estimates the S&P 500's expected volatility over a constant 30-day horizon from SPX option prices. Its annualized reading describes magnitude, not whether the index is expected to rise or fall.

Read: What Is the VIX? How to Read the Volatility Index
Does a rising VIX mean the S&P 500 will fall?

No. VIX is non-directional. It often moves opposite the S&P 500, but that relationship is not fixed and the two can rise or fall together.

Read: What Is the VIX? How to Read the Volatility Index
Does a VIX of 20 mean a 20% move this month?

No. It is an annualized volatility reading. A rough 30-calendar-day one-standard-deviation scale is about 5.7% when annualized volatility is 20%, under simplifying assumptions; it is not a guaranteed range or a direction call.

Read: What Is the VIX? How to Read the Volatility Index
Can daily VIX closes make an intraday chart?

No. A daily closing series supports daily points. An intraday or minute chart needs a separate eligible intraday series with rights to use and display it.

Read: What Is the VIX? How to Read the Volatility Index
Can I copy Cboe's public VIX quote into a commercial app?

Public access to a Cboe page does not by itself grant rights to scrape, store, or redistribute its index data. Confirm a written data agreement and the intended customer-display use with Cboe or an authorized vendor.

Product and Trials

What is the difference between Candle Pulse Fixed and Rolling?

Fixed groups selected-basket observations into scheduled buckets; Rolling follows a trailing window ending at the latest available observation. Both can show partial history and inherit feed delay.

Read: Candle Pulse: Fixed vs. Rolling Candles
Why can a Rolling candle shrink?

An earlier high or low can leave the trailing window as new data advances its start. The wick then reflects only observations still inside the window.

Read: Candle Pulse: Fixed vs. Rolling Candles
Does Rolling use a different data connection or change Trend Matrix 360?

No. It uses the existing provider history and basket observations. Candle Pulse mode does not change Trend Matrix timeframes or EMA calculations.

Read: Candle Pulse: Fixed vs. Rolling Candles
Are Candle Pulse candles official S&P 500 candles?

No. They summarize estimated movement for the selected weighted stock basket, not the complete official index.

Read: Candle Pulse: Fixed vs. Rolling Candles
Does a Trend Matrix Long label mean I should buy?

No. It describes EMA directional alignment under defined rules, not an investment recommendation. The four-EMA system is implemented in the desktop development preview, pending public-release review.
