A stock can lead its sector yet trail the index, or be among the day's biggest percentage gainers while contributing very little to the benchmark. Say whether leadership means stock return, sector-relative return, dollar change, or index contribution.
In a hypothetical cap-weighted basket, a 0.2%-weight security gaining 6% contributes about +0.012 percentage points. A 6%-weight security gaining 1% contributes about +0.060 percentage points. The first is the faster individual mover; the second is the larger index driver.
A movers list shows individual price action. An impact view considers the applicable index method. Comparing both helps reveal whether a benchmark move is being carried by the same stocks that look dramatic on a percentage-change list.
