Market Breadth vs. Weighted Market Impact
Advancer counts and weighted contributions answer different questions about the same session.

Market breadth measures how widely a move is shared across a defined group of securities. An index can rise while breadth is weak because the index and the breadth count assign influence differently.

Count how many securities advanced, declined, or finished unchanged over the same interval. A 30-stock watchlist and the full S&P 500 have different breadth readings; neither count should be presented without its universe and time window.
Imagine a hypothetical basket with 12 advancers and 18 decliners. Breadth is negative by count. If those 12 advancers carry more index weight and their combined simplified contribution is +0.30 percentage points while decliners contribute −0.20, the basket is up +0.10 percentage points. This is an illustration, not a market snapshot.
Broad participation can support an index move; narrow participation can reveal dependence on a few names. Neither observation predicts the next session. Compare breadth with weighted contribution before deciding what the headline index number actually describes.
