Why Can the Index Rise While More Stocks Fall?
A smaller number of higher-weighted constituents can contribute more than a larger number of lower-weighted decliners. See the Learn article for a worked conceptual example.
What problem does this solve?
The index reads up while more of the selected stocks are down.
Quick answer
Breadth counts stocks, while the index combines their influence under its weighting method. A few strong contributors can outweigh a larger count of small declines.
Steps
- Verify that the index and stock count use the same time interval.
- Read the advancing and declining counts for the selected basket.
- Compare positive and negative estimated contributions, not just the number of green and red cards.
- Remember that an incomplete basket can disagree with the full official index.
What you should see
The count-versus-weight difference can explain an apparently contradictory screen without assuming a data error.
If it still doesn't work
If values do not add up within the displayed selection, report the interval, basket, feed, and cleared screenshot.
