Why Is the S&P 500 Basket Sometimes 29 Stocks Rather Than 30?
Check the selected basket and current application state before diagnosing a count. There is not one assumed explanation for a 29-security view.
What problem does this solve?
The S&P selected-basket count shows 29 when you expected 30.
Quick answer
A 29-security count has no single safe explanation without checking the actual selection and data state. Do not assume one company has been deleted from the S&P 500.
Steps
- Check the S&P basket choice in the combined chart's All / Top 10 / Top 15 / Top 20 / Top 30 menu.
- Review the followed ticker list under Settings → Stocks & Tabs → Stock list; it can contain fewer than 30 securities.
- Count ticker symbols separately from companies when two share classes are present.
- If the selected count still differs, record the app version and chosen list for support.
What you should see
You can determine whether the displayed count reflects configuration, symbol availability, or a product issue.
If it still doesn't work
Send the visible ticker list, source date, app version, and a cleared screenshot to support. Do not send Alpaca keys.
