What Does Index Weight Mean?
Index weight estimates how much influence a constituent has under that index's methodology. A higher weight can make the same percentage move matter more.
What problem does this solve?
A stock card shows a weight and you want to know what it represents.
Quick answer
In the current app, Index weight is the followed security's weight from IVV holdings, downloaded at launch with a built-in fallback. It is not its price change or an official S&P 500 index calculation.
Steps
- Confirm that you are reading the current S&P 500 basket; Nasdaq-100 and Dow views are planned, not available in the desktop app.
- Read the security's Index weight and the selected basket's combined % SP500 Value.
- Compare the dated IVV reference with a current source before explaining a difference.
What you should see
You can distinguish a 5% stock return from a 5% index weight and from a percentage-point contribution.
If it still doesn't work
For a suspected calculation issue, send the security, view, displayed values, weight-source date, and app version; keep account data private.
